PHP is a general-purpose, server-side interpreted programming language that is especially suited for web development.
Your web application can be programmed with PHP or it can be built with a CMS, like WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, etc... there is a whole variety. In such a case, the version of the CMS you use will make you have to install a specific version of PHP.
What version of PHP to use
If you program in PHP
Depending on the PHP methods you use, you will have to have one version or another, or that, or adapt your programming to the version of PHP you intend to use.
If you use CMS
